The new UK points system was introduced on 1 December 2020 and included a number of significant changes to the points based system. The Skilled Worker visa replaced the Tier 2 visa scheme and allows entry to the UK on a long term basis to fill a skilled job vacancy in a wide range of skilled and medium-skilled occupations including in IT, accountancy, teaching, and healthcare. The occupation needs to be on the Skilled Worker eligible occupations list, which has been expanded to include more lower-skilled occupations such as butcher, baker, plasterer, etc.

If the occupation is on the Skilled Worker Shortage Occupation List it is easier to gain enough points under the points system. Before they apply, Skilled Worker visa applicants must have a job offer and a Certificate of Sponsorship from a UK employer with a valid Skilled Worker sponsor licence.

Skilled Worker English language requirement

Skilled Worker visa applicants may be required to complete an approved UKVI version of the English language test if they are not nationals of an English-speaking country on the list, or have not completed a degree level course taught in English accepted by UK NARIC. There are no English language requirements for Intra-Company Transfer visa applicants.

The Skilled Worker visa is for workers who have a skilled job offer and a certificate of sponsorship from a UK employer with a valid sponsor license. The Skilled Worker visa applicant will need to gain enough points under the UK visa system.

Intra-Company Transfer visa

This Visa is for employees of a multinational company who are being transferred to the business's UK branch. Applicants must have a valid certificate of sponsorship from their employer.

There are two sub-categories :

Long term staff
Graduate trainee

T2 Minister of Religion visa

This Visa is for workers who have been offered a job, such as missionary or minister of religion, within a religious community organisation in the UK.

International Sportsperson visa

This Visa is for elite sportspeople and coaches. The applicant must be recognised or endorsed by their sport's governing body.

Points Required for Each Tier

Based on the tier the candidate will have to allocate the necessary points which vary on the type of visa they are applying for. The required points may differ from each other as follows:

Age

Depending on the age, one can allocate 5 to 20 points. The system privileges young applicants assessing them with more points than those older.

English Language

Each applicant must obtain 10 points for English language ability. Nationals of countries where English is an official language automatically obtain ten points, while nationals of other countries must first take a test to prove their English ability.

Qualifications

Some tiers assess education level from 30 to 50 points and others from 5 to 15 points.

Earnings / Maintenance

Depending on the tier earnings or maintenance, candidates financial means are assessed with 15 to 45 points of 5 to 20 points.

UK experience

Some of the tiers may evaluate the experience that one has had in the United Kingdom with 5 points.

Certificate of Sponsorship

CoS is evaluated with 30 to 50 points.

Tier 2 Visa sponsorship letter from the employer

The certificate must have a reference number for a job in the UK issued by an A-rate certified sponsor employer in the UK with an accepted Job Salary.
